Quantum computers store data in quantum binary digits called quantum bits, or qubits. Qubits can be made using different technologies, including: 


  • Superconducting rings
  • Optical traps
  • Photons of light

Some technologies require cooling to near absolute zero, while others operate at room temperature. 


Quantum computers use particles such as electrons or photons that are given either a charge or polarization to act as a 0, 1, or both a 0 and 1. 


Quantum computers outperform supercomputers in terms of efficiency. In 2020, China claimed to have developed a quantum computer capable of performing computations 100 trillion times faster than any supercomputer.
